The Khadimul Muslimeen of Oyo Kingdom, Imam Daud Olalade Tijani Igi-Ogun, has cautioned journalists against fueling tensions over the ongoing controversy between the Alaafin of Oyo and the Ooni of Ife on traditional titles in Yorubaland.
Speaking in an interview with The Journal Nigeria, Imam Igi-Ogun said much of the tension was worsened by media misinterpretation of reports suggesting that the Alaafin had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni, which, according to him, was wrongly presented.
“That ultimatum story was a problem created by journalists. We are not expecting our media to create more problems for us. If there is a controversial issue, the press should report it with care and moderation, not in a way that stirs conflict,” he said.
The Islamic cleric emphasized that both monarchs deserved respect, stressing that Yoruba youths should learn to honor their traditional rulers rather than ridicule them.
“In Yorubaland, our elders — the Alaafin and the Ooni — are institutions that must be respected. You will not see the Igbo people ridicule their kings. Why then should we allow disrespect for ours? Agba must give respect to Agba, and youths must uphold peace and unity,” Imam Igi-Ogun noted.
He further explained that historically, the Alaafin of Oyo had played a central role in the recognition of Yoruba titles, citing examples from the colonial period when the Alaafin represented Yorubaland at national platforms.
The cleric urged traditional rulers to avoid public confrontations, warning that disunity among them could embolden outsiders to ridicule Yoruba culture.
He also called on both Muslims and Christians to apply the teachings of the Qur’an and the Bible in promoting peace.
“Any religion that does not bring peace should not be regarded as a religion. Our leaders must avoid statements that will create problems in society. Peace should remain our top priority.”
Imam Igi-Ogun appealed to the media, religious leaders, and youths to prioritize unity, mutual respect, and cultural preservation in addressing sensitive issues concerning Yoruba monarchy.
