Nigeria’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs and one-time Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Professor Joy Uche Ogwu, has passed away in New York, United States.
According to family and close associates, Professor Ogwu died on Monday, October 13, 2025, after a protracted illness.
Until her passing, Prof. Ogwu was widely respected for her distinguished service in diplomacy and international relations. She served as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2007 and later represented the country at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where she became a prominent voice on global peace, security, and gender issues.
Tributes have begun to pour in from across Nigeria’s diplomatic and academic communities, remembering her as a trailblazer, mentor, and a symbol of grace in public service.
