Police Hunt Gunmen After Shooting Accord Chairman Ajibola In Osogbo
Gunmen riding a motorcycle shot and wounded Ashimiyu Ajibola the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State in the MDS area of the state capital late on Wednesday. The victim sustained gunshot injuries but survived and is receiving treatment in hospital.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi. The attack took place at about 11:50 p.m. on June 3 2026 when two armed men on a motorcycle targeted Ajibola in what police described as an apparent attempted murder.
Upon receiving the distress report police mobilised tactical and conventional teams to the scene. Officers swiftly evacuated the victim to a medical facility where personnel confirmed he is in stable condition and responding positively to treatment. Other teams pursued the fleeing suspects while investigators recovered exhibits at the location for forensic analysis.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan condemned the attack and ordered a high powered investigation to unravel the circumstances identify those responsible and ensure their prompt arrest and prosecution.
The Osun State Government also reacted through Commissioner for Information Kolapo Alimi who urged the police to leave no stone unturned in efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
This incident comes amid reported political tensions in Osun State where the Accord Party aligned with the state administration under Governor Ademola Adeleke has faced previous challenges. In May 2026 there were reports of attacks on the party secretariat and campaign office in Osogbo involving sporadic shooting that damaged parts of the building including offices.
Such targeted violence against party officials forms part of broader patterns of political insecurity observed in Nigeria. Monitoring organisations have documented numerous cases of shootings intimidation and attacks on political actors especially in the periods leading to elections or during internal party activities. While comprehensive national databases on attacks specifically against local government party chairmen are not centrally published civil society trackers note that election related violence and thuggery remain persistent concerns across states with Osun experiencing its share in recent times.
Police records and official statements in this case highlight a rapid operational response including scene preservation pursuit of suspects and forensic follow up. Analysts point out that sustained investigations combined with community cooperation often prove key to resolving such cases and deterring future occurrences. The emphasis by both the police command and the state government on thorough probes reflects institutional efforts to uphold the rule of law amid these challenges.
The stable condition of the victim offers some relief yet the episode underscores the risks faced by political figures and the need for continued vigilance by security agencies to protect democratic participation at all levels.
