Doyin Okupe, a prominent Nigerian political figure and former spokesperson to ex-Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, has died at the age of 72. Okupe, known for his significant contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape, passed away today, 7th of March, 2025.
The former Presidential spokesperson was from Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government area of Ogun State and was was said to have been sick for some time, died in the early hours of Friday in Lagos at the age of 72.
The Chairman of Ikenne Local Government, Jamiu Ashimi, confirmed the demise of the medical doctor turned politician on Friday.
Ashimi said, “I just confirmed the tragic news of the passing of Dr Doyin Okupe. May his soul rest in peace.”
Born on March 22, 1952, Okupe was a physician by training but gained national prominence through his involvement in politics. He served as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) in the early 1990s and later became a key member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Okupe’s political career was marked by his roles as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Obasanjo and later as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Jonathan. In these capacities, he was instrumental in communicating and defending government policies, earning a reputation as a steadfast and articulate spokesperson.
Beyond his official duties, Okupe was known for his active engagement in national discourse, often sharing his perspectives on political developments through various media platforms. His contributions extended to health and social issues, reflecting his medical background and commitment to public service.
Okupe’s passing marks the end of a notable chapter in Nigeria’s political history. His dedication to public service and his role in shaping political communication in the country will be remembered by many.
He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
