2027 Elections: INEC Reviews Ramadan Clash, Assures Inclusive Participation

Nigeria’s 2027 Elections timetable has sparked debate as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reviews concerns over a potential Ramadan clash while reaffirming its commitment to inclusive participation.
INEC had fixed February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections and March 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Assembly polls. Party primaries are scheduled to hold between May 22 and June 20, 2026. However, the February 20 date falls within the Ramadan period (February 7 – March 8, 2027), prompting concerns from stakeholders about voter turnout and operational efficiency during the fasting season.

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, publicly urged INEC to reconsider the date, noting that Ramadan is a sacred period of fasting and reflection for millions of Nigerian Muslims. Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad also called for a review to ensure broader electoral participation.
Responding, INEC said the timetable strictly complies with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and its 2019 Regulations and Guidelines, which fix general elections for the third Saturday of February in an election year.

The commission, through National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna, stated it is sensitive to public concerns and has commenced consultations. INEC added that it may seek legislative intervention if adjustments become necessary, while maintaining constitutional compliance.
As preparations for the 2027 Elections intensify, INEC reiterated its pledge to transparency, equal access, and credible polls, assuring Nigerians that any updates to the timetable will be communicated promptly.
