Former Lagos Speaker Obasa Refutes Allegations of Firearms Discovery in Assembly Office

The Journal Nigeria February 19, 2025

Ola Akinwunmi

In a recent development, former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has categorically denied reports alleging the discovery of firearms in his office. These allegations surfaced following his impeachment on January 13, 2025, over claims of gross misconduct and financial misappropriation.

Obasa, who was abroad during the impeachment proceedings, addressed the media upon his return, stating, “I have never been involved in any activities that would warrant such allegations. The claims about firearms are baseless and politically motivated.” He further challenged those behind the accusations to provide concrete evidence to substantiate their claims.

The former Speaker also expressed concerns about the manner in which his impeachment was conducted, emphasizing the need for due process and adherence to constitutional provisions. He highlighted that the integrity of the legislative institution must be upheld, and any actions taken should reflect the principles of justice and fairness.

In response to Obasa’s statements, the Lagos State House of Assembly maintained that the impeachment followed all necessary legal procedures. A spokesperson for the Assembly stated, “The decision to impeach the former Speaker was reached after thorough deliberation and in accordance with the law. The allegations against him were serious, and the House acted in the best interest of the state.”

The political landscape in Lagos continues to be dynamic, with various stakeholders weighing in on the recent events. As the situation unfolds, the public awaits further developments and clarifications regarding the allegations and the subsequent actions of the legislative body.
