Governor Soludo Urges Traditional Rulers to Forge United Path for South-East

The Journal Nigeria April 30, 2025

Mathew Amaechi

In a stirring call for unity, Governor Chukwuma Soludo today urged the traditional rulers of the South-East to come together in a collaborative push towards regional development. Speaking at a meeting of the South-East Traditional Rulers’ Council in Awka, the governor extended his warm felicitations to the custodians of the region’s rich cultural heritage and stressed that their combined efforts are key to building the South-East of their shared dreams.

“We are as different as we are similar. It is important to recognise the diverse cultures within the region and the strength that can be found in unity. We are stronger together, united in spite of our diversity. Keep up the spirit!”

Governor Soludo said, emphasizing that every stakeholder, including traditional rulers and community organizations, has a vital role to play in unlocking the full potential of the South-East.

He lamented the erosion of traditional values, noting that the Igbo land he once knew as a child is witnessing changes that undermine the foundational customs and taboos that once bound the community together. “The Igbo language holds us together, irrespective of the dialects,” he observed.

The governor was clear: it is high time for traditional rulers to unite, not only to preserve these traditions but also to counter the growing tide of cultural and moral challenges, including the celebration of ill-gotten wealth and an increasing clash of values in the modern era.In his remarks, Soludo called for a renewed focus on hard work, enterprise, and integrity as indispensable values that can reignite the region’s industrious spirit. “This is the time for South-East traditional rulers to unite and work with various forces to reclaim our homeland. Your role is pivotal,” he added, calling for a return to the celebration of the region’s heritage and industrious past.

The sentiment of unity was echoed by Dr E. C. Okeke, Chairman of the South-East Traditional Rulers Council, who lauded Soludo for his visionary leadership. “You are a good governor, doing well in all ramifications. We commend your initiatives and commitment to improving the lives of the citizens in Anambra State and beyond,” he affirmed, highlighting the importance of collaboration among South-East governors and traditional leaders to ensure the welfare and progress of the region.

Governor Soludo’s address serves as a clarion call at a time when the South-East is at a crossroads between modernity and tradition.

The Governor’s appeal for solidarity among all cultural custodians marks the belief that a shared vision and collective effort will pave the way for the sustainable development of the region, a development that honours both its storied past and its promising future.
