Plateau Governor Hails Ambassador Mary Lar at 90

The Journal Nigeria May 9, 2025

Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang joined admirers nationwide and abroad in honoring Ambassador Professor Mary Lar, widow of Nigeria’s democratic pioneer Solomon Lar, as she marked her 90th birthday on Friday. The governor lauded her as “a distinguished mother, moral compass, and symbol of purposeful leadership” in a heartfelt tribute celebrating her decades of service to Plateau State and Nigeria.

In a statement released by his office, Governor Mutfwang praised Lar’s extraordinary journey from classroom educator to First Lady of Plateau State and later Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Netherlands. “Her life continues to inspire excellence, dedication, and patriotism,” he said, emphasizing her role as “a beacon of hope whose contributions transcend faith, ethnicity, and generations.”

Mary Lar, a professor and wife of the late Chief Solomon Lar—the first civilian governor of Plateau State and founding National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—has long been revered for her unwavering commitment to unity and education.

Governor Mutfwang highlighted her pivotal role in establishing educational institutions that have shaped generations, calling her “a towering figure and compassionate mentor” for Plateau’s youth. “Your legacy of love, compassion, and inclusivity has fortified our shared quest for a united and progressive Plateau,” Mutfwang stated, crediting her for preserving the democratic ideals championed by her husband during Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule.

He further described her as “a burden-bearer and shining light” whose moral guidance remains vital to the nation’s development. The governor’s tribute also emphasized Professor Lar’s diplomatic service and advocacy for women’s empowerment, noting her as proof of “the strength and capacity of Nigerian women in nation-building.” On behalf of his family, the Plateau State government, and its citizens, Mutfwang extended prayers for her continued health, wisdom, and longevity. “We celebrate not just your years, but the indelible footprints you’ve left on our hearts and history,” he added.

The statement, signed by the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, reaffirmed Plateau’s pride in Professor Lar’s enduring impact as she enters her tenth decade—a milestone honoring a life woven into the fabric of Nigeria’s growth and unity.
