IGP Deploys Reinforcements to Benue Amidst Escalating Killings, Public Outcry

The Journal Nigeria June 16, 2025

Mathew Amaechi

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has arrived in Benue State and ordered the immediate deployment of additional tactical teams to stem a horrifying wave of deadly attacks that have gripped the region.
The move comes as public outrage intensifies, with calls for a state of emergency ringing across social media following a brutal two-day killing spree attributed to suspected herders.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the IGP’s presence and directive via a statement on Monday, simply stating: “IGP arrives Benue, orders for additional deployment of tactical teams.” This action follows reports of a devastating toll, with at least 45 confirmed dead in Guma Local Government Area, although local leaders fear the true number could exceed 200, including entire families reportedly burned alive and even security officers among the victims.

The federal government’s perceived silence and delayed response to the Benue crisis have drawn sharp criticism from Nigerians.

Many have drawn a stark contrast to the swift declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State in March, a situation that reportedly saw no fatalities. This apparent disparity has fueled public frustration and intensified calls for decisive action in Benue.

The deployment of additional police resources is a critical step towards restoring peace and security in the beleaguered state. Residents and leaders alike are hopeful that the IGP’s direct involvement and the influx of tactical teams will finally bring an end to the incessant violence and bring perpetrators to justice. The coming days will reveal the effectiveness of this intensified security operation in a state desperate for respite from the escalating bloodshed.
