The Defence Headquarters has revealed that the recent surge in terrorist activities across Nigeria’s North East and North West regions is attributed to the influx of foreign fighters from the Sahelian region. These foreign insurgents are collaborating with local accomplices to launch deadly attacks on military bases and civilian populations, raising concerns about the escalating security situation.
According to Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations, the military has identified two key factors contributing to the resurgence of terrorist attacks. Firstly, the influx of foreign fighters serving as reinforcements for the terrorists, and secondly, the support from local collaborators who serve as informants, reporting on troops’ movements.
Despite these challenges, the military has reassured Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism. The military’s strategic objective is to break the terrorist will to fight by destroying their logistics, administrative, and fighting capabilities, as well as applying regional and international pressure.
Emphasizing the long-term nature of counterterrorism efforts, Buba noted that wars are fought and won by destroying the enemies’ will to fight. The military is committed to achieving this objective, understanding that it is a long and enduring military operation.
In a call to action, Buba reiterated the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring security, stating that “the military dey for you, dey for us.” He urged Nigerians to recognize that security is everybody’s business and that compromising on security compromises everyone’s security.
