Oluwaseun Akingbe December 20, 2021

Two police officers have been confirmed dead, following an attack by unknown gunmen on a police checkpoint at Obosi Interchange along the Onitsha-Owerri road in Anambra state.

An eyewitness confirmed ten policemen were at the checkpoint during the incident as the assailant stormed the checkpoint, shooting directly at the police officers.

“I was in the traffic when I heard the sporadic shootings of the gunmen, which made everyone took to their heels, including the policemen at the checkpoint.”

He however said two of the ten policemen were unlucky as they were shot dead by their attackers.

” The place was brutal yesterday . I think their targets were the policemen who mounted a checkpoint, which caused a horrific traffic situation, on both lanes, made worse by the ongoing road construction in the area. The witness said.

The Anambra state police command through its Public Relations Officer, PRO, Ikenga Tochuku also confirmed the unfortunate incident which led to the killing of its officers along Obosi Idemili flyover.

The PPRO said the incident which took place at the check point is one of the prices paid by the police in service to the nation and humanity.

He further confirmed three of the armed men were also demoralized, while two of the gallant policemen unfortunately lost their lives.

Ikenga also said that  the police were able to recover the riffles of the slained police officers, while a Lexus SUV was also recovered from the attackers.
