Messi Nets 900th, Miami Exit Champions Cup
Argentine football legend Lionel Messi scored the 900th goal of his illustrious career but could not prevent Inter Miami from exiting the CONCACAF Champions Cup after a 1-1 draw with Nashville SC saw the visitors advance on away goals in their last-16 clash on Wednesday night.
The 38-year-old superstar reached the historic milestone just seven minutes into the second leg encounter at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, giving Miami a 1-0 lead in what was the club’s final match at the venue before relocating to a new purpose-built facility next month. However, Nashville’s Cristian Espinoza struck a 74th-minute equalizer that leveled the tie at 1-1 on aggregate, and with the away goals rule still in effect for the regional club competition, the Tennessee-based side progressed to the quarter-finals.
The bittersweet result marked a disappointing end to what had promised to be a celebratory evening for the MLS champions, who were bidding farewell to their home stadium since entering Major League Soccer in 2020.
Messi’s 900th career goal came 21 years after his first senior strike for Barcelona in a 2-0 victory over Albacete in May 2005, when the fresh-faced Argentine was just 17 years old. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has since established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in football history, with his tally spread across four clubs and the Argentine national team.
The milestone goal was Messi’s 81st for Inter Miami since his high-profile move to Florida in July 2023, a transfer that transformed the club’s fortunes and elevated MLS’s global profile. In just 96 appearances for Miami, Messi has maintained a remarkable scoring rate while helping the team win the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2025 MLS Cup, cementing the club’s status as a major force in American soccer.
The bulk of Messi’s goals came during his legendary 21-year spell at Barcelona, where he netted 672 times in 778 matches, an average of 0.86 goals per game. During that period, he helped the Catalan giants win 35 trophies, including 10 La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions League crowns, and seven Copa del Rey triumphs, establishing Barcelona as one of the most dominant clubs in European football history.
After leaving Barcelona in 2021 due to the club’s financial difficulties, Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain, where he scored 32 goals in 75 matches over two seasons and won three trophies, including two Ligue 1 titles. His stint in France, while statistically productive, was often described as underwhelming compared to his Barcelona years, with critics pointing to his struggles to replicate his previous dominance in a different tactical system.
On the international stage, Messi has scored 115 goals in 196 appearances for Argentina, including two in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final victory over France in Qatar. That triumph, which saw Argentina win their third World Cup and first since 1986, completed Messi’s trophy collection and silenced critics who had questioned whether he could lead his country to football’s most prestigious prize.
Despite the historic milestone, Messi still trails his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo in career goals. The 41-year-old Portuguese forward, currently playing for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, has scored 965 goals across spells with Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Al-Nassr, and the Portugal national team. The Messi-Ronaldo rivalry has dominated global football for nearly two decades, with both players consistently pushing each other to new heights.
Brazilian legend Pele is often credited with scoring over 1,000 goals during his career, but those figures have been subject to debate among football statisticians. Most recognized records place Pele’s tally at 762 goals for Santos, New York Cosmos, and Brazil, excluding friendlies and exhibition matches that were historically included in his official count.
Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano, who played alongside Messi for both Argentina and Barcelona, described the 900-goal achievement as “insane” during a pre-match press conference.
“I’ve been lucky enough to see most, or many, of the goals he’s scored, much closer than you all, and that’s a privilege,” Mascherano stated. “The number we’re talking about is insane, and that’s why Leo is a one of a kind.”
Wednesday’s match carried added significance as it marked Inter Miami’s farewell to Chase Stadium, their home since joining MLS in 2020. The club will move into a new 26,700-seat stadium next month, designed to accommodate the massive crowds that have flocked to watch Messi and his star-studded teammates, including former Barcelona players Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez.
Miami’s elimination from the CONCACAF Champions Cup represents a setback for the club’s ambitions to dominate North American club football. The competition, which features the top clubs from across the CONCACAF region including Mexico, the United States, Central America, and the Caribbean, has historically been dominated by Mexican sides. Only two MLS teams have ever won the tournament in its current format, with no American club lifting the trophy since 2000.
Messi is widely expected to represent Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament, expanded to 48 teams for the first time, will see the defending champions attempt to win back-to-back titles, a feat last achieved by Brazil in 1958 and 1962. If Messi does participate, it will be his sixth World Cup appearance, extending his own record for the most tournaments played by an outfield player.
The Argentine forward has already extended his Inter Miami contract through the end of the 2028 season, ensuring he will remain in MLS beyond the World Cup. His presence has transformed Miami into one of the most valuable and marketable franchises in American sports, with ticket sales, merchandise revenue, and global television viewership reaching unprecedented levels for an MLS club.
Messi’s goalscoring prowess has been a defining characteristic of his career across all competitions. His ability to score from open play, set pieces, and penalties, combined with his vision, dribbling, and playmaking skills, has made him arguably the most complete attacking player in football history. He holds numerous records, including most Ballon d’Or awards, most goals in a calendar year (91 in 2012), most goals for a single club, and most goals in La Liga history.
As Messi continues his career in the twilight years, the question of when he will retire remains open. His performances for Inter Miami have shown that despite his age, he remains capable of competing at the highest level, though the CONCACAF Champions Cup exit will serve as a reminder that even football’s greatest players cannot win every match.
Inter Miami will now focus their efforts on defending their MLS Cup title when the new season begins next month in their new stadium, while Nashville SC advance to face Mexican giants in the Champions Cup quarter-finals.
