New Tenant Abducts Three Siblings in Ebonyi Community
The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of three siblings by a recently arrived tenant in the Igbeagu community of Izzi Local Government Area. The victims, Favour, Obinna, and Kamso Okeoha, were taken on Saturday from their home in Nwezenyi village while their parents were away. The suspect, a woman who had moved into the compound only forty-eight hours prior, remains unidentified. Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu stated on Tuesday that an investigation is currently underway to locate the children and apprehend the perpetrator.
The abduction appears to have been a premeditated act of deception. Residents revealed that the woman rented the apartment on Thursday and moved in on Friday. To embed herself quickly, she adopted a friendly persona, even painting her room and inscribing the words “One Love” on the wall to disarm her new neighbours. This performance of camaraderie lasted exactly one day before she vanished with the children on Saturday. The community has been left in a state of shock, as no one has yet established the suspect’s true name or origin.
This incident marks a disturbing trend of child thefts within the state. Just last month, three children were abducted under similar circumstances from a compound in Nkwegu, Abakaliki. That case involved a two-year-old boy and two girls aged four and two. The recurrence of such crimes within such a short timeframe has heightened anxiety among parents in the region. Security analysts suggest that these “predatory tenants” are increasingly using the anonymity of the rental market to gain access to vulnerable households.
Sympathisers have been gathering at the Okeoha residence in Nwezenyi as the family awaits word on the children’s whereabouts. The parents have been too distraught to issue a formal statement, but the atmosphere in the community remains tense. Local leaders are now urging landlords to conduct more rigorous background checks and demand valid identification before letting out rooms to strangers. The lack of basic documentation in this case has significantly hindered the initial police pursuit.
The Ebonyi Police Command has reiterated its commitment to rescuing the Okeoha siblings. However, the absence of any photographs or verifiable data on the suspect complicates the search. Officers are reportedly scouring transit hubs and interviewing residents of neighbouring villages to see if the woman was spotted with the three children. For now, the “One Love” inscription on the empty room serves as a grim reminder of the suspect’s calculated entrance and exit.
