The Northern States Governors’ Forum has condemned Wednesday’s suicide attack at the Gomboru Market Mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, describing it as a “barbaric, dastardly, and cowardly act” designed to undermine regional peace.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Forum’s Chairman and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, conveyed the collective condemnation and sympathy of his colleagues to the victims and the people of Borno. The attack occurred during evening Maghrib prayers, claiming at least five lives and leaving over 35 injured.
“The targeting of a place of worship is a grave violation of human conscience and religious sanctity,” Governor Yahaya stated through his media aide, Ismaila Uba-Misilli. “Such acts only strengthen our resolve to stand united against terrorism and violent extremism.”
The governor called for heightened security measures, especially around places of worship and public spaces during periods of large gatherings. He assured Borno residents of the Northern Governors’ solidarity and full support as security agencies work to prevent further attacks.
“We pray that Almighty Allah grants eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus to the souls of those who lost their lives, comforts their families, and grants speedy recovery to the injured,” Yahaya said.
He also offered prayers for continued strength and wisdom for Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, praising his “courage and resilience” in confronting security challenges.
The statement reiterated the collective determination of Northern states to collaborate in support of peace, security, and the protection of innocent lives, emphasizing that “acts of terror will not break the spirit or unity of the region.”
According to eyewitnesses and initial reports, a suspected suicide bomber infiltrated the crowded mosque at the peak of prayers, transforming a moment of worship into one of tragedy and mourning.
