The Ogun State Government has intervened to pause the selection of the next Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, leading the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to postpone its crucial nomination meeting. This move aims to ensure strict procedural compliance and avert potential legal disputes in the succession process.
Originally scheduled for 15 December 2025 at Bisrod Hall in Ijebu-Ode, the meeting was deferred after the ruling house received an invitation for a consultative session with state officials on 16 December. Chairman Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, a former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, stated that the postponement allows for a thorough review to align the process with legal standards. “It is a process of comparing notes and ensuring that we cross our Ts and dot our Is,” he explained, emphasizing the ruling house’s appreciation for government guidance to maintain a flawless selection.
Vice Chairman Professor Fassy Yusuf, a University of Lagos academic, confirmed that the ruling house, kingmakers, and the Awujale Interregnum Committee will participate in the government meeting. He disclosed that no fewer than 60 princes have formally expressed interest in succeeding the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on 13 July 2025 at the age of 91 after a historic 65-year reign.
Both leaders dismissed widespread speculations that the delay was connected to any specific aspirant, including famed Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (KWAM1), whose earlier claim to lineage was rejected by the ruling house as unsubstantiated. They clarified that the postponement stems solely from the need to adhere meticulously to customary and statutory requirements.
The succession process began in earnest after the Ijebu-Ode Local Government issued a 14-day directive for the submission of candidates. The Awujale stool rotates among four ruling houses: Anikilaya, which produced the late Oba Adetona; Fusengbuwa, which is now next in line; Fidipote; and Gbelegbuwa.
