The Oyo food subsidy programme has officially begun, with the state government rolling out discounted essential food items for civil and public servants as part of efforts to ease economic pressure and support workers during the festive season.
The initiative was announced in Ibadan by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the Oyo food subsidy is designed to soften the impact of current economic realities while improving food access for workers across the state.
According to Oyelade, the intervention reflects the welfare focused agenda of the Oyo State government and its commitment to improving workers’ living standards. He explained that the programme will make key food items such as bags of rice, vegetable oil, chicken and other household essentials available to workers at subsidised rates.
The Oyo food subsidy scheme is being implemented through the Agricultural Credit Corporation of Oyo State, which will distribute food items valued at about N100 million. Beneficiaries will be civil and public servants who have formally indicated interest through their respective ministries.
Oyelade stressed that participation is strictly limited to state workers and that beneficiary lists will be carefully compiled by the account sections of each ministry to ensure transparency and proper coordination.
He added that payment for the subsidised food items will be spread out through salary deductions, which will commence from February 2026. This arrangement, he said, is meant to reduce the immediate financial burden on workers while maintaining accountability in the process.
The Oyo food subsidy programme is expected to provide practical relief for workers at a time when food prices remain high, reinforcing the state government’s position that worker welfare remains a priority.
