Before his transition to politics, Peter Obi was a force in the corporate world, showcasing his exceptional business acumen and strategic thinking in the banking and finance sector and across other related sectors. He successfully founded and managed several companies in various sectors, including manufacturing, financial services, and hospitality. He served as the Chairman at Fidelity Bank Plc., Guardian Express Mortgage Bank and Paymaster Nigeria Plc at different points. He was also a Director at Guardian Express Bank Plc, Chams Nigeria Plc. , Emerging Capital Ltd. and Card Centre Plc. Obi attended Christ the King College, Onitsha where he completed his secondary school education and obtained his West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) before proceeding to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka for a Degree in Philosophy in 1984. Following his zeal for knowledge, he attended several other institutions such as Lagos Business School, Harvard Business School, London School of Economics, Oxford University, Cambridge University where he took advanced courses ranging from financial/ marketing management to advanced management, business policy, and executive leadership.

He served as Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014 and was widely acclaimed for his fiscal reforms and transparent governance. During his tenure, Obi implemented sound financial management practices, resulting in increased fiscal discipline and economic stability. He introduced a series of measures aimed at reducing waste, cutting unnecessary expenditures, and increasing internally generated revenue. These efforts led to a remarkable reduction in the state’s debt burden and an improvement in in the credit rating of the state. Obi’s prudent fiscal policies and commitment to good governance earned him accolades both within Nigeria and internationally. In recognition of his achievements, he received the “Best Governor in Nigeria” award from several reputable organisations. In 2010, he received the West Africa ICT Development Award for Governor of the Year (2010). He was honoured with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Award for Best Performing Governor on Immunisation in southeast Nigeria in 2012. Thisday Newspaper named him the Most Prudent Governor in Nigeria in 2009.

On the 29th May 2023, his opponent Bola Ahmed Tinubu was inaugurated as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Obi has however, rejected the results of the election as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission and made a petition against Bola Tinubu’s victory at the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja– a case which is still ongoing.
