Six Dead, 23 Injured in Lagos–Ibadan Expressway Crash as FRSC Blames Speeding, Fatigue
At least six people have been confirmed dead and 23 others injured following a fatal road crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The accident occurred on Monday around the Four Square Camp area, a known accident-prone stretch of the busy expressway. The FRSC Ogun State Command said the crash involved a DAF CF 380 trailer in what was described as a lone accident.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the FRSC, Odunsin Afolabi, stated that the crash happened at about 11:27am, adding that the FRSC rescue team from the Ogunmakin Unit Command arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the distress call.
According to the FRSC, 29 passengers were involved in the crash, out of which six lost their lives on the spot, while 23 sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC attributed the cause of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway crash to driver fatigue and excessive speeding, which reportedly led to a loss of control of the vehicle.
Afolabi also warned against the dangerous practice of mixed loading, particularly the transportation of cattle alongside passengers, noting that it complicates rescue operations and often increases fatalities during accidents.
The injured victims and deceased were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital, GOFAMINT Camp in Ogunmakin, and Victory Hospital in Ogere.
