Ten Dead in Coordinated Attacks Across Plateau Villages

Riyom, Plateau State — Fresh violence erupted in Riyom Local Government Area on Sunday night, leaving at least ten residents dead and renewing fears across farming communities. Local sources confirmed that nine people were killed in Dorowa Babuje, while Jol recorded one fatality, during what appeared to be coordinated attacks lasting between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm.

Barrister Solomon Dalyop, National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYMA), told a Channels Television correspondent in Jos that attackers on motorcycles struck Jol from the Manga axis despite early warnings issued to security agencies. In Dorowa Babuje, assailants reportedly emerged from Jong-Wereh, where they had allegedly been encamped for several days, before launching the assault.

Security forces, particularly personnel from Operation Rainbow, were already deployed in both communities and engaged the attackers immediately. Dalyop emphasized that the rapid military response significantly limited casualties. “If not for the quick intervention of the military in Dorowa, the casualty figure would have been much higher. Their swift action deserves recognition,” he said. Attempts to secure a comment from Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer Alfred Alabo proved unsuccessful, and the Nigerian Police have yet to release an official statement on the attacks.

These attacks form part of a disturbing pattern of insecurity in Riyom LGA, where farming settlements have suffered repeated night raids, ambushes, and forced displacement in recent months. Residents of Jol and Dorowa Babuje remain deeply fearful, grieving their dead, and calling for sustained protection. Community leaders and youth groups have renewed urgent appeals to the federal and state governments to implement long-term security and peacebuilding measures.

Analysts warn that without coordinated and decisive action, cycles of violence in Plateau State will continue, leaving vulnerable communities exposed to further bloodshed. The latest killings underscore persistent gaps in local security intelligence and the pressing need for proactive strategies to combat banditry. This incident highlights the urgent requirement for a robust, continuous presence of security personnel in volatile areas such as Riyom LGA, ensuring that residents can farm, travel, and live without the constant threat of attack.
