Zootopia 2 Smashes Records To Become Hollywood’s Biggest Animated Film Ever
Disney’s Zootopia 2 has officially roared into the history books, becoming Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated film of all time after amassing a staggering $1.7 billion (£1.3bn) at the global box office.
The animated blockbuster has now overtaken Inside Out 2, which previously held the record with $1.69 billion following its 2024 release, cementing Zootopia 2’s place at the very top of Hollywood animation.
Beyond animation, the film’s success places it as the ninth highest-grossing movie in global box office history, trailing only cinematic giants such as Avatar, Titanic, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
While Zootopia 2 now reigns supreme among Hollywood animated films, the overall animated box office crown still belongs to China’s Ne Zha 2, which pulled in $2.2 billion (£1.65bn) last year, largely driven by its massive domestic audience.
Released in November with an estimated production budget of $150 million (£112m), Zootopia 2 is the long-awaited sequel to Disney’s 2016 hit Zootopia. The film reunites beloved rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) with charming former con-artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) as they take on a fresh mystery involving a slippery new reptilian resident, Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan).
The sequel wasted no time making box office history. It recorded the largest opening weekend ever for an animated film, coinciding with Thanksgiving in the United States, and became the fastest animated Hollywood movie to cross the $1 billion mark globally.
Reacting to the milestone, Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman credited fans worldwide for the film’s success.
“This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible,” Bergman said.
“We’re incredibly proud of our filmmakers. Zootopia 2 is an extraordinary achievement, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life.”
With its blend of sharp humour, dazzling animation, and global appeal, Zootopia 2 has not only revived one of Disney’s most beloved franchises but also redefined what animated films can achieve at the box office.
