Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has married his longtime partner, Jodie Haydon, in a private ceremony held on Saturday at his official residence in Canberra, The Lodge. At 62, Albanese becomes the first serving Australian leader to wed while in office.
The intimate garden ceremony was attended by close family and friends. Haydon, a financial services professional, wore a long white gown, while the prime minister appeared in a bow tie. A short video shared on social media showed the couple holding hands as confetti fell, accompanied by a single caption: “Married.”
In a joint statement, the couple said: “We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends.”
The wedding comes more than a year after Albanese proposed on February 14, 2024 (Valentine’s Day), when he said he had found a partner “who I want to spend the rest of my life with.” The couple wrote their own vows and were married by a celebrant.
Albanese’s pet dog, a cavoodle named Toto, served as the ring bearer, while guests toasted the couple with beer from a Sydney brewery. The newlyweds walked down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s classic hit, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours).”
The pair are scheduled to begin a five-day honeymoon within Australia from Monday.
Albanese, who divorced his former wife in 2019, has an adult son, Nathan. He met Haydon more than five years ago at a business dinner in Melbourne.
The centre-left Labor Party leader secured a second three-year term in office in a landslide election victory in May 2025. He joined the Labor Party while in high school and later became active in student politics at the University of Sydney.
