The Journal Nigeria January 20, 2025

In response to a tragic petrol tanker explosion in Niger State’s Suleja Local Government Area which claimed over 70 lives and left more than 50 people injured, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for the immediate implementation of stricter safety measures to prevent such disasters.

Obi took to social media to express his condolences, describing the incident as “truly heartbreaking.” He noted that tanker explosions have become increasingly common, resulting in colossal losses of life and property.

In a statement on his X handle on Monday, he described as “truly heartbreaking,” the petrol tanker explosion that occurred along Dikko-Maje Road in the Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State last weekend.

“Reports indicate that over 70 lives were lost, while more than 50 people were injured in the incident,” he noted, stating that the accidents “have sadly become increasingly recurrent in recent times.”

“May God grant them, and all of us, the fortitude to bear this loss, eternal rest to the departed, and a swift recovery to the injured,” Obi prayed.

The former Anambra State governor commiserated with the families of the victims and the people of Niger State, praying for their strength and resilience in the face of this tragedy. Obi’s plea for enhanced safety measures comes as the nation grapples with the aftermath of this devastating incident.
