Pensioners Laud Southwest Governors Over Pension Increase, Prompt Payments

The Journal Nigeria January 24, 2025

Ola Akinwunmi

In a heartwarming development, pensioners in the Southwest zone of Nigeria have commended the Oyo state government for achieving the highest payment for pensioners nationwide. This accolade was bestowed upon the government during the zonal meeting of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, held in Osogbo, Osun State capital.

The pensioners’ union acknowledged the efforts of all Southwest governors in increasing the pension minimum wage, highlighting initiatives such as the 25,000 and 20,000 minimums, 33% pension increase of 2010, consequential adjustment of 2019, and 20% increase of 2024, among other entitlements for retirees.

Comrade Olusegun Abatan, NUP Public Relations Officer in the Southwest, urged the governors to prioritize the welfare of senior citizens, emphasizing the need to pay outstanding pensions and gratuities. Abatan also appealed to the federal government to improve electricity distribution, citing the inefficiency of the current band arrangements.

On the issue of security, the pensioners’ union called on Nigerians to support the efforts of security forces by providing useful information to combat crime in the country. The meeting, chaired by Wahidi Oloyede, was attended by the secretary and other stakeholders.

This development is a testament to the governors’ commitment to the welfare of senior citizens, and the pensioners’ union looks forward to continued support and improvement in their living conditions.
