Lagos Speaker Meranda Dismisses Resignation Rumors Amidst Assembly Turmoil

The Journal Nigeria February 19, 2025

Ola Akinwunmi

In the wake of swirling rumors, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has firmly denied claims of her resignation. These rumors have been circulating amidst ongoing leadership disputes within the Assembly.

Segun Ajiboye, Chief Press Secretary to Speaker Meranda, addressed the allegations on Wednesday, stating unequivocally that the Speaker remains actively engaged in her official duties. “The Speaker is in the office. I don’t know where that is coming from,” Ajiboye remarked, emphasizing the falsehood of the resignation claims. He further described the rumors as “a lie from the pit of hell,” reaffirming that there is no truth to the story. Ajiboye also noted that a fabricated letter dated February 17, 2025, purportedly from Meranda, has been circulating on social media; however, this letter lacks any authentic signature.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025. Obasa was ousted by a majority vote over allegations of gross misconduct and financial mismanagement. In response, he has filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of his removal, arguing that the Assembly was in recess at the time of the proceedings.

Despite these challenges, Speaker Meranda has received substantial support from her colleagues. Notably, twenty lawmakers from Lagos West have expressed their backing, rejecting proposals to replace her and emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability within the Assembly’s leaders.

As the situation continues to develop, the Lagos State House of Assembly remains a focal point of political attention, with stakeholders closely monitoring the unfolding events.
