Ethan Nwaneri Shines as Arsenal’s Youngest UCL Knockout Scorer in Historic 7-1 Victory

The Journal Nigeria March 5, 2025

Yemi Olakitan

Eindhoven, Netherlands – Arsenal’s prodigious talent, Ethan Nwaneri, etched his name into the annals of UEFA Champions League history by becoming the competition’s third-youngest scorer in a knockout stage match. At just 17 years and 384 days old, Nwaneri’s goal was a highlight in Arsenal’s emphatic 7-1 triumph over PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of the Round of 16.

The Gunners delivered a masterclass performance at the Philips Stadion, with captain Martin Ødegaard leading the charge by netting two goals. The team’s offensive prowess was further showcased with contributions from Leandro Trossard, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, and Mikel Merino. PSV’s sole response came from a penalty converted by Noa Lang, offering little solace in a match dominated by the visitors.

Nwaneri’s goal, assisted by fellow teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly, not only underscored his burgeoning potential but also marked the first instance in Champions League history where two English teenagers combined for a goal.
