BREAKING: Osinachi’s Husband Sentenced to Death for Homicide

The Journal Nigeria April 28, 2025

In a verdict that has rocked the religious and entertainment communities alike, Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late celebrated gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.

The judgment, delivered on Monday at the Wuse Zone 2 courthouse, marks a dramatic and somber conclusion to a case that has captivated national attention.

Presiding over the case, Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme delivered the final sentence after emphatically dismissing Peter Nwachukwu’s attempt to challenge the prosecution’s evidence through what was described as a “no-case submission.” The court found that the evidence was sufficiently compelling to convict him of culpable homicide in connection with the tragic death of his wife, which occurred on April 8, 2022.

Osinachi Nwachukwu was widely revered for her powerful voice and her heartfelt contributions to the gospel music scene in Nigeria. Her untimely death marked a significant loss for fans and fellow artists, while the subsequent investigation into her passing had gripped the nation. The court’s verdict now adds a new and painful chapter to her legacy, stirring intense emotions among supporters and raising urgent questions about the circumstances that led to her fatal injury.

In the wake of the sentencing, leaders from various religious communities and fan groups have expressed profound sorrow, as well as shock, over the unfolding tragedy. Many lament the loss of a beloved artist, while others voice concern over the seriousness of the charges leveled against someone so intimately connected with the victim. “This outcome is a bitter pill to swallow,” said one spokesperson from a prominent church community. “It not only marks the loss of an irreplaceable talent but also forces us to confront issues of violence even within the sanctity of a family.”

Legal experts suggest that this case could set a precedent for how similar cases involving domestic violence and homicide are handled in the future, especially when they attract widespread public scrutiny. The prosecution maintained that the evidence of culpability was irrefutable, a stance vindicated by the death sentence. Meanwhile, supporters of the defendant, though few, have begun voicing their intent to explore all possible legal avenues for appeal—a process that is expected to prolong the courtroom battle.

As the nation grapples with this jarring development, new questions are emerging about the investigative process and the series of events that culminated in the tragic demise of a beloved gospel icon. With no further details released at this time, the court has vowed to proceed with the appropriate legal protocols, ensuring that all sides of the case are thoroughly examined during any subsequent appeals.

In the coming days, more information is expected to shed light on the evidence that led to Peter Nwachukwu’s conviction. For now, the verdict stands as a stark reminder of the potential for personal tragedies to evolve into national crises, leaving behind a community in mourning and a legal system under scrutiny.
