Senate Sets Up Oversight Committee for Rivers Administrator, Signals Tougher Scrutiny

The Journal Nigeria May 6, 2025

Mathew Amaechi

In a decisive move to tighten legislative scrutiny and uphold democratic governance in Rivers State, the Nigerian Senate has constituted an 18-member oversight committee to monitor the activities of the state’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.).The development was announced on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the resumption of plenary. He emphasized that the creation of the committee was part of a broader effort to promote transparency, accountability, and effective governance in Rivers State, which has remained a political flashpoint in recent months.

Leading the committee is Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who is expected to steer the team in ensuring that administrative conduct in the state aligns with national legislative standards and democratic principles.”This committee has a critical role in safeguarding democratic values and ensuring that governance in Rivers State is carried out within the framework of accountability and legality,” Akpabio stated, while urging the members to begin their assignment without delay.

The committee, which cuts across party and regional lines, includes prominent lawmakers such as former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, ex-Plateau Governor Simon Lalong, and Labour Party Senator Ireti Kingibe. Others named to the panel are Senators Adamu Aliero, Osita Izunaso, Osita Ngwu, Kaka Shehu, Aminu Abass, Tokunbo Abiru, Adeniyi Adebire, Sani Musa, Asuquo Ekpeyong, Onyekachi, Idiat Adebule, Ide Dafinone, and Mohammed (APC, Jigawa), with the Clerk of the Senate also enlisted to support the committee’s functions.

While the exact scope of the committee’s oversight remains to be fully disclosed, Akpabio hinted at possible adjustments to its composition following further consultations, signaling the fluid political dynamics surrounding the situation in Rivers State. The decision to appoint a Sole Administrator for the state—a move that has stirred legal and political debates—has placed Rivers under national scrutiny. The Senate’s latest action appears to be a balancing act aimed at asserting federal legislative authority while addressing mounting public concerns over governance in the oil-rich state.

Political analysts say the Senate’s swift move may be an attempt to quell rising tensions and reassure Nigerians of the National Assembly’s commitment to democratic accountability. The committee is expected to submit periodic reports to the Senate as it embarks on what is likely to be a closely watched oversight mission.
