Oyo Labour Party Chairman Urges Tinubu to Tackle Poverty, Hunger, Corruption in Third Year

The Journal Nigeria May 30, 2025

Olusegun Adeyemo

The Chairman of the Labour Party in Oyo State, Mr. Atayese Sadiq, has called on President Bola Tinubu to implement policies that will improve the welfare of Nigerians, especially as the President marks his second year in office.

Speaking on a radio programme in Ibadan monitored by The Journal Nigeria, Mr. Sadiq emphasized the urgent need for the government to address critical issues such as food security, poverty, and corruption.

“President Tinubu should put in place measures that would boost food security to reduce hunger and poverty across the country,” he said.

According to Mr. Sadiq, the Labour Party believes that the performance of any administration should be measured by the well-being of its citizens. He referenced various international reports indicating that Nigeria’s poverty rate is reaching alarming levels.

“About 60 percent of Nigerians, according to global indices, are falling below the poverty line. That’s a serious concern,” he stated.

On the issue of national security, the Labour Party chairman acknowledged the federal government’s efforts in combating terrorism and banditry but urged the President to further strengthen the country’s security architecture.

“When we talk about security, we must commend the sacrifices of our security agencies. However, there is still a need for comprehensive reforms to ensure lasting peace and protection for all Nigerians,” he said.

Mr. Sadiq also criticised the level of corruption in the country, noting that it undermines progress in critical sectors.

“President Tinubu has asked Nigerians to make sacrifices, but the level of corruption remains too high. In the last budget, it was alleged that projects worth ₦6 trillion were inserted. With the total capital budget at ₦24 trillion, that means 25 percent of the budget was compromised,” he alleged.

He concluded by reminding President Tinubu of the promises made under the Renewed Hope Agenda, urging him to stay committed to those campaign pledges made during the 2023 elections and his inauguration on May 29, 2023.

“Until corruption is tackled decisively, issues like hunger and insecurity will remain difficult to solve,” Mr. Sadiq warned.
