Kebbi Moves to Prevent Flooding with Drainage Clearance

The Journal Nigeria June 14, 2025

Iliyasu Abdullahi Bah

In preparation for the upcoming rainy season, the Kebbi State Government has initiated a comprehensive drainage clearance operation across vulnerable areas of the state.

Urban Development Commissioner Hayatu Bawa announced the measure on Friday in Birnin Kebbi, explaining that the exercise aims to remove obstructions from waterways to facilitate proper rainwater flow and mitigate potential flooding.

“The ongoing drain clearance is crucial to avoiding the destructive impacts of flooding we’ve experienced in previous years,” Bawa stated. He expressed appreciation to Governor Nasir Idris for authorizing and funding the critical flood prevention initiative.

The commissioner issued a stern warning against building on waterways and improper waste disposal, noting these practices exacerbate flooding risks. He strongly advised residents in flood-prone zones to consider moving to higher ground for safety.

“While government is doing its part, we need public cooperation on proper waste disposal and avoiding waterway encroachments are vital,” Bawa emphasized.

The state government reassured residents of its dedication to environmental safety and flood prevention measures as the rainy season approaches.
