Oyo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on Nigerians to prioritize their own safety by speaking up and cautioning drivers who engage in excessive speeding.

Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Rosemary Alo, gave the charge while speaking with Journal Nigeria Correspondent at the scene of a fatal accident in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Commander Alo emphasised the importance of passengers taking an active role in ensuring their safety on the road.

“Passengers must take their safety seriously and speak out when drivers are over speeding,” she said. “The FRSC has been doing its part by organizing seminars and sensitizing drivers and road users on safe driving practices.”

She explained that the accident, which involved four trucks, four Micra cars, and one Toyota Camry, was the result of road rage and reckless driving, which could have been avoided if motorists adhered to road safety guidelines.

Commander Alo once again urged drivers to refrain from speeding and to adopt defensive driving techniques to reduce the risk of accidents.

Alo confirmed the death of four individuals and injury of one person in the accident which occurred along the Soka axis of the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway on Tuesday morning.

According to a report by Journal Nigeria, the FRSC has evacuated the deceased victims to the Adeoyo Morgue, Ring Road, Ibadan, while the injured victim has been taken to a hospital for treatment.

Speaking at the scene of the crash, Alo told Journal Nigeria that the accident involved a total of eleven people—eight males and three females. She explained that the crash was caused by road rage and reckless driving, involving multiple vehicles including four trucks, four Micra cars, and a Toyota Camry.

“In my assessment, the accident occurred due to road rage. Some vehicles were excessively speeding and attempting to overtake one another, which led to a series of collisions,” she said.

She further explained that other vehicles coming from behind were unable to avoid the scene of the initial collision and crashed into the already affected vehicles, resulting in a pile-up.
