Yobe Police Detonate Unexploded Bomb

The Journal Nigeria July 2, 2025

Iliyasu Abdullahi Bah

Yobe State Police Command has safely detonated an unexploded high velocity projectile discovered in Damaturu, with the operation scheduled for Wednesday.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Dungus Abdulkarim made this announcement through an official statement released in Damaturu.

He confirmed that the specialized Explosive Ordnance Disposal and CBRN Unit handle the controlled demolition of the dangerous device.

The disposal operation took place at 1pm at a secure location along Gashua Road, deliberately distanced from the city center for safety.

Abdulkarim had earlier before the detonation reassured residents of their safety, emphasizing that the procedure would be conducted successfully.

Authorities believe the explosive, originally found near Potiskum Road, may have been discarded by scrap metal collectors unaware of its nature.

“This follows the tragic June 22 explosion at a Kano scrap facility that killed 15 people,” the spokesman noted, drawing attention to recent dangers.

He issued a stern warning to scrap dealers, particularly those in high risk areas, to avoid handling any unusual or unidentifiable metal objects.

“The public should immediately report any suspicious items to security agencies for proper assessment,” Abdulkarim advised.

The statement concluded with Police Commissioner Emmanuel Ado’s warning that anyone caught trading in explosive materials would face arrest for jeopardizing public safety.
