Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to the emerging opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that the alliance will always prioritise the welfare of Nigerians above political interests.
Obi made the statement on Thursday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, expressing strong support for the coalition’s decision to adopt the ADC as its unifying platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. He described the move as a product of “deep reflection” on Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic conditions and the urgent need for transformative leadership.
“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections,” Obi wrote.
“With Distinguished Senator David Mark serving as the National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as the National Secretary, our commitment is to work collectively towards delivering competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that puts Nigerians first.”
Obi, who served as governor of Anambra State, emphasised the need for unity among opposition parties to effectively challenge the status quo and bring lasting change to Nigeria.
“No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls—even when those bridges are uneasy,” he noted.
The Journal Nigeria had earlier reported that the coalition—comprising prominent opposition leaders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others—formally unveiled the ADC as their collective platform during a high-profile event on Wednesday at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
At the event, David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola were named interim National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC respectively, marking a strategic shift in the political alignment of Nigeria’s opposition forces.
The coalition aims to present a formidable front against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s expected bid for re-election in 2027.
Obi’s reaffirmation of support signals a deepening resolve among key opposition figures to rally behind a unified cause, with the ADC now positioned as a central vehicle for political reorganisation and national recovery.
