The Oyo State Executive Council has approved the sum of N7.7 billion for the procurement of two aircraft aimed at enhancing the state’s capacity to combat banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats.
This development was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade. He explained that the approval was granted during the council’s weekly meeting held on Tuesday.
According to Oyelade, the government’s decision underscores its renewed commitment to safeguarding the state against the increasing infiltration of bandits and the proliferation of criminal activities.
He revealed that the two aircraft to be procured are DA 42 MNG models, which are Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft. These planes are equipped with advanced surveillance technology capable of identifying targets from both high and low altitudes, providing a strategic edge in intelligence gathering and real-time monitoring.
The commissioner further clarified that the preference for the DA 42 MNG aircraft over helicopters was due to cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency. He noted that the aircraft are cheaper to maintain, their spare parts are readily available, and the Nigerian Air Force already operates similar models. This, he said, would facilitate operational synergy between state security efforts and the national military.
Despite the relative peace being experienced in Oyo State, Oyelade acknowledged that there are still isolated incidents of kidnapping and banditry in certain areas. He reiterated that the aircraft acquisition represents a proactive measure to address these lingering threats and to ensure lasting security for residents of the state.
