The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, was laid to rest on Monday in a solemn and deeply traditional ceremony at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The revered monarch, who died at the age of 91, was interred according to centuries-old customs, concluding a remarkable 64-year reign that made him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving and most respected traditional rulers.
Monday’s burial was attended by members of the royal family, Ijebu high chiefs, and an array of dignitaries, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Ogun Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, business magnate Aliko Dangote, and Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate).
Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960 at just 26 years old and went on to redefine traditional leadership through a blend of cultural preservation and progressive reform. Known for his candour, discipline, and unwavering advocacy for the autonomy of traditional institutions, he was a fearless voice on national matters, often championing the cause of the Ijebu people and Yoruba culture at large.
Though the final rites were conducted in privacy, in accordance with Ijebu tradition, the streets of Ijebu Ode filled with mourners—many dressed in ceremonial attire—paying their last respects to a monarch they hailed as “bold,” “visionary,” and “deeply principled.”
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona’s reign was marked by landmark reforms in traditional governance, support for education, and vocal contributions to national discourse. He was instrumental in enhancing the political and cultural visibility of Ijebuland both within Ogun State and across Nigeria.
His death brings to a close a significant era in Yoruba monarchy and leaves behind a legacy that has already shaped multiple generations. The Ogun State Government is expected to unveil a programme of commemorative events in the coming days to honour the life and contributions of the late monarch.
As the people of Ijebuland begin their official mourning, tributes continue to pour in from across the country, affirming Oba Adetona’s place in the pantheon of Nigeria’s most iconic traditional rulers.
