Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has confirmed that forward Gabriella Salgado’s injury is “long-term,” casting a shadow over South Africa’s semifinal clash against Nigeria at the ongoing WAFCON in Morocco.
Ellis, speaking after the match, expressed deep concern for the attacker, who was stretchered off following a painful collision while clearing the ball. “It’s a long-term injury,” Ellis told journalists, visibly shaken. “Our thoughts are with Gabriella, and we hope for the best as the medical team continues to assess her condition.”
Sports journalist Aderonke Adesola, reporting exclusively from Morocco to The Journal Nigeria, revealed that the atmosphere inside the stadium was tense and emotional as players from both sides were seen in tears. “The players were heartbroken when Gabriella went down. It was one of those moments where football took a back seat,” Aderonke said.
Despite the incident, Nigeria’s Super Falcons managed to edge South Africa with a dramatic late goal, sparking wild celebrations among their fans. Yet, even in the midst of victory, the players and coaching staff spared a thought for Salgado’s wellbeing, chanting “Mission X is possible” but also acknowledging the bittersweet nature of the win.
Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade joined others in sending a heartfelt message: “We celebrate this win, but our hearts go out to Gabriella. No one wants to see a fellow player suffer such an injury. We wish her a quick and full recovery.” Defender Michelle Alozie added: “Football unites us, and moments like this remind us that health and safety are bigger than the game.”
Further updates on Salgado’s condition are expected once the South African medical team completes its assessment.
