The Jigawa State Police Command has successfully apprehended two individuals suspected of involvement in illegal arms trafficking, leading to the recovery of two locally fabricated firearms. The arrests were made following intelligence-led operations conducted by officers attached to the Kazaure Divisional Police Headquarters.
According to an official statement released on Sunday in Dutse, the state capital, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Jigawa State, DSP Lawan Shi’isu, confirmed the development. The statement detailed that the first suspect, 30-year-old Abdussamad Haruna, a resident of Dansure village near Gwiwa in Kazaure town, was intercepted by police operatives while attempting to transport an illegal firearm to an undisclosed recipient in Plateau State.
“Acting on credible intelligence, our officers tracked and arrested the suspect as he was moving to deliver the weapon,” Shi’isu stated. A subsequent search of the suspect’s belongings led to the recovery of a locally fabricated revolver rifle, which had been carefully concealed inside a sack.
Shi’isu further revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the suspect may have connections to criminal networks operating both within and outside Jigawa State. “The police are diligently working to uncover his possible affiliations with armed groups and illicit arms dealers,” he added.
The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Dahiru Muhammad, commended the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and swift action in disrupting the arms trafficking network. He reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state, warning that anyone involved in criminal activities, particularly the illegal trade of firearms, would face the full wrath of the law.
The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to assist law enforcement agencies in combating crime. The statement assured residents that all information received would be treated with confidentiality, emphasizing the command’s dedication to protecting lives and property in Jigawa State.
“We appeal to citizens to report any suspicious activities or persons to the nearest police station or through our emergency contact channels,” Shi’isu added. “Together, we can ensure a safer and more secure environment for all.”
The arrests highlight the ongoing efforts by the Jigawa State Police Command to clamp down on the proliferation of illegal arms, which pose a significant threat to public safety and national security. Investigations into the case continue as authorities work to dismantle the wider syndicate involved in the illicit arms trade.
The police further appealed to members of the public to continue sharing credible information to support ongoing efforts to tackle crime, assuring them that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property in Jigawa.
