A car racing contest allegedly organised by suspected internet fraudsters, popularly called Yahoo boys, has claimed five lives in the Ipara area of Remo, Ogun State.
The incident, which happened around 2 p.m. on Monday, reportedly began as a wager of ₦30,000 between the drivers. Witnesses said one of the participants lost control of his unregistered Lexus car while speeding towards Fidiwo.
According to community sources, the vehicle veered off the road near Owolowo, ramming into a roadside shop and instantly killing two bystanders — identified as Akeem Ashiru and Shina Badejo.
The impact also trapped the driver and two male passengers inside the wrecked vehicle. Emergency responders rescued them with varying degrees of injury and rushed them to different hospitals.
However, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) confirmed that the driver died at the scene, while the two passengers later died in hospital — one at Isara State Hospital and the other at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.
Videos circulating on social media show the crushed building, lifeless bodies on the ground, and bystanders crying over the loss.
TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi described the crash as a lone accident caused by excessive speed.
“The driver, while heading outwards Fidiwo at high speed, lost control and rammed into the two pedestrians. The driver and the victims died at the scene, while the two other occupants later succumbed to their injuries,” Akinbiyi said.
The tragedy comes just a day after another fatal accident in Ogun State in which a motorcyclist’s passenger was crushed to death by a Volvo truck in the Rounder area of Abeokuta after falling from the bike.
