Olusegun Adeyemo
Veteran Nollywood actor Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, has died at the age of 70. His passing was confirmed on Friday by film producer Seun Oloketuyi via Instagram.
Chief Kanran was a celebrated figure in the Yoruba film industry, renowned for his distinctive style, sharp humour, regal screen presence, and decades-long contribution to stage, television, and film. Beginning his career on stage in 1975, he later transitioned to television, gaining prominence through productions like Mirror in the Sun and the NTA drama series that showcased his versatility.
He often portrayed kings, chiefs, and wealthy characters in films such as Ewe Orun, Aiye, Efunsetan Aniwura, Agbarin, and Bata Wahala. His stage credits included the title role in Ola Rotimi’s Kurunmi and a key performance in Langbodo, Nigeria’s drama entry for Festac ’77.
In a 2020 interview, he revealed that he stepped away from the industry due to politics and cliques that clashed with his insistence on professionalism.
His memorable portrayal of Alaafin Kanran in a 1988 Lagos Television drama remains one of his most celebrated roles.
As of press time, the cause of death has not been disclosed, and the family has yet to announce burial arrangements.
