PDP Governors Convene Strategic Meeting in Zamfara Ahead of Crucial NEC Session

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) converged at the Zamfara State Government House in Gusau on Saturday for a closed-door meeting ahead of the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) session slated for Monday in Abuja.

Although the official agenda was not disclosed, credible party sources revealed that the Gusau meeting was strategically timed to address the contentious zoning debate, which has become the most divisive issue ahead of the party’s elective national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan.

At the heart of the consultations is the zoning of key leadership positions, a decision expected to shape not only the convention but also the PDP’s overall strategy for the 2027 general elections. Insiders describe today’s gathering as a tactical effort by the PDP Governors Forum to build consensus, align interests, and present a unified front before Monday’s NEC session.

The zoning debate has grown particularly sensitive in light of the party’s internal divisions, with competing blocs pushing for favorable outcomes. Observers note that the manner in which the PDP leadership resolves these disputes will have far-reaching implications for the party’s cohesion, credibility, and electoral fortunes.

Beyond zoning, governors are also expected to deliberate on broader concerns tied to the PDP’s operational unity, internal democracy, and overall electoral competitiveness.

As the countdown to the NEC session intensifies, both party members and political watchers are keeping a close eye on the unfolding developments in Gusau. The outcome of these consultations could prove decisive in determining whether the PDP emerges from its current challenges stronger and more united, or further fragmented ahead of its critical national convention.
