A violent mob on Monday attacked the convoy of Abubakar Malami, SAN, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital. Malami, who recently declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), narrowly escaped harm as his entourage came under siege.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, suspected political thugs, ambushed the convoy during a political engagement, hurling stones and using sticks to smash windscreens and vandalize vehicles. Several cars in the fleet were left with shattered windows and severe body damage, though no fatalities have been reported.

Security operatives attached to the former minister repelled the assault and swiftly moved to secure him from danger.
While the exact motive behind the attack is still under investigation, political observers link the violence to rising tensions and rivalries ahead of the 2027 governorship race. Malami, a long-standing political figure in Kebbi, previously served under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government before aligning with the ADC.
Confirming the incident, the Kebbi State Police Command described the situation as “under control” and assured that investigations had begun to identify and apprehend those behind the attack. The command also appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid retaliation, stressing that it will not tolerate any threats to public peace.
In a statement, Malami’s media office condemned the attack as “unfortunate and unacceptable,” urging security agencies to safeguard political actors and their supporters. The office also called on loyalists to remain law-abiding and not be drawn into reprisals.
This is not the first time political violence has erupted in the Northwest. In August 2025, a transition committee event in Kaduna State was also disrupted by suspected thugs, leaving property destroyed and several people injured.
Analysts warn that the Birnin Kebbi attack highlights Nigeria’s deepening political volatility. They caution that without decisive action from security agencies and political stakeholders, pre-election violence may intensify as campaigns heat up.
The incident underscores the urgent need for stronger security coordination and dialogue among parties to ensure peace as the country prepares for the next round of elections.
