Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk, made his first court appearance on Tuesday via video link from jail.
Robinson, who wore a suicide-prevention vest, appeared emotionless during the hearing and spoke only to confirm his name. The court declared him indigent and appointed a public defender to represent him.
He faces seven charges, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child. Prosecutors allege Robinson targeted Kirk because of his political views, citing text messages and a handwritten note that indicated intent.
Evidence presented includes messages to his roommate after the shooting, a note found under a keyboard suggesting he planned the attack, and a rifle allegedly tied to the killing. Authorities also accused Robinson of attempting to delete incriminating communications and destroy evidence.
Robinson was ordered held without bail, and prosecutors announced they will seek the death penalty. The judge also issued a protective order barring him from contacting Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk.
The case has been set for a waiver hearing on September 29, which will also take place via WebEx.
