The city of Abuja has come alive as more than 400 golfers converge on the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club for the Nigeria @ 65 Independence Golf Tournament, a five-day sporting event marking the country’s 65th Independence anniversary.
The tournament, which runs from September 27 to October 1, has drawn participants from across the country, including serving and retired senior military officers, diplomats, and other dignitaries. Organisers say it is more than a competition — it is a celebration of resilience, unity, and discipline at a time the nation commemorates Nigeria @ 65.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. James Agbonhese, said the Nigeria Independence event was designed not only to showcase golfing talent but also to embody the nation’s enduring values. “It is a showcase of talent, but also a reflection of our national values — unity, perseverance, and discipline,” he said.
The tournament has also become an avenue to unveil new infrastructure at the TYB Golf Club, including a modern practice range, a midway hut, a back-nine starter shed, and a golf cart bay. Vice Chairman of the Club, Dr. Ali Peters, who represented the Club Captain, said the upgrades and the event itself also honour the Nigerian Army’s role in safeguarding national unity and security.
A standout feature this year is the participation of over 100 female golfers, including three professionals. Tournament Manager, Shola Adebayo, described the programme as “a blend of competition and culture,” with cultural showcases, networking sessions, and social activities accompanying the games.
The competition teed off with Category 3 and 4 play on September 27, followed by professional and invitational rounds, and will climax with the prestigious Category 1 contest. The closing ceremony on October 1 — Independence Day itself — will feature a ceremonial tee-off and an awards night, with special guests including the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; DSS Director-General, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi; and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Undiandeye.
As golfers take their swings and dignitaries gather under Abuja’s September skies, the Nigeria @ 65 Independence Tournament is shaping up as more than sport. For organisers and participants alike, the Nigeria Independence event is a statement of unity, pride, and celebration of a nation that continues to grow stronger at 65.
