Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially stepped down as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), concluding his two-term tenure that began in 2015. Yakubu’s resignation took place on Tuesday, marking the end of his 10-year leadership at the electoral body.

In a formal handover ceremony, Yakubu transferred his duties to May Agbamuche, who will assume the role of Acting Chairman. Agbamuche, a National Commissioner with the commission, will oversee the daily operations of INEC until a permanent replacement is appointed.

Professor Yakubu expressed his gratitude for the cooperation of his colleagues during his tenure and urged them to extend the same support to Agbamuche. He called for the commission’s unity and collaboration as the electoral body continues its vital role in Nigeria’s democratic process.

“The commission must remain united to continue its work smoothly. I urge everyone to cooperate with the Acting Chairman as we await the appointment of a new substantive head of the commission,” Yakubu stated.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to announce a new Chairman for INEC shortly, with discussions surrounding the appointment anticipated to take centre stage at the upcoming Council of State meeting later this week.
