Zimbabwean Member of Parliament, Desire Moyo, representing Nkulumane Constituency, has died after his vehicle collided with an elephant along the Harare–Bulawayo highway, near Shangani, on Friday.
Reports from local media indicated that the incident occurred when the vehicle carrying Moyo and four others rammed into the elephant, which subsequently attacked and crushed the car. Moyo, who was 45 years old, reportedly died on the spot — just a day before his 46th birthday.
Four other passengers — identified as Madalaboy Ndebele, Senator Rittah Ndlovu, Sethulo Ndebele, and Libion Sibanda — sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Fellow legislator, Discent Collins Bajila, confirmed the tragic news, stating that the accident occurred when the vehicle struck the elephant on its rear, prompting the animal to turn and attack the car, causing extensive damage to the roof and right side.
As of the time of filing this report, police authorities were yet to issue an official statement on the crash.
The death of the opposition MP has drawn tributes from colleagues and supporters, who described him as a dedicated representative and passionate advocate for his constituency.
