A joint detachment of defence and security operatives on Monday forcefully dispersed protesters of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow movement in the Maitama area of Abuja.
The protest, led by Omoyele Sowore and attended by figures including Barr. Aloy Ejimakor, took place near the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) headquarters. Demonstrators were chanting slogans demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu and warning security personnel against the use of teargas.
Eyewitnesses reported that security operatives fired gunshots to disperse the crowd, prompting protesters to flee for safety. No official statement on casualties or arrests has yet been released.
Reports say the security agents had been on ground before 7am.
The incident underscores the growing tension surrounding the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign and raises concerns about the handling of protests in the capital. Further details are expected as authorities and organizers provide updates.
