On Monday, November 17, 2025, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, called on all sectors of society to join hands in the fight against child sexual abuse, stressing that protecting children is a shared responsibility. Her remarks were made during the United Nations Day for the Prevention of, and Healing from, Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about the plight of vulnerable children.
Mrs. Tinubu described acts of child abuse, including sexual exploitation, trafficking, and rape, as a “wake-up call” for society and a violation of the very essence of humanity. She warned that silence in the face of abuse could endanger more children, urging citizens, families, and community leaders to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases to the authorities.
“The safety and wellbeing of our children should be the priority of every Nigerian,” the First Lady said. “We all have a duty to ensure that every child grows up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from fear, exploitation, and violence.”
She further emphasized the need for both preventive measures and support systems for survivors of abuse. According to Mrs. Tinubu, comprehensive care must include emotional and psychological support, as well as legal protection for affected children.
The First Lady’s call comes amid growing global concern over child sexual abuse. According to the United Nations, millions of children worldwide are exposed to sexual exploitation and violence each year, highlighting the urgent need for preventive action and effective reporting mechanisms.
Mrs. Tinubu’s advocacy aligns with the Nigerian government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen child protection laws and enhance public awareness of child rights. Civil society organizations and child protection agencies have welcomed her intervention, noting that high-profile advocacy can play a crucial role in mobilizing communities and authorities to take decisive action.
She concluded by urging Nigerians to work together, saying, “Every child deserves a chance to grow, learn, and thrive in safety. Let us all be proactive in safeguarding their future.”
