Tragedy struck the Oba Ile community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State on Thursday, as a mentally-derailed man killed an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The 19-year-old suspect reportedly stabbed the officer to death during a struggle. An eyewitness said the incident occurred when the suspect’s mother invited NSCDC operatives to help restrain him, not to create trouble in the community.
The eyewitness explained: “When the boy started misbehaving this morning, his mother invited two civil defence officers to help her chain him. Meanwhile, in the process of chaining him, he overpowered the civil defence man, took his knife, and stabbed him. Unfortunately, the officer died, even though he was armed at the time.”
The Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC in Ondo State, Mr. Daniel Aidamenbor, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate. He said the officer was attempting to take the man to a facility for treatment when the attack occurred.
Similarly, the state Police Relations Officer, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, stated that the NSCDC officer died while receiving treatment in a hospital as a result of the injuries sustained during the struggle.
