The Lagos State Police Command, in a statement signed on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, has ordered the suspension of an Egungun festival scheduled for November 27 and 28, 2025, in the Oregun area of the state, citing security concerns.
The command also confirmed the arrest of suspects linked to the circulation of posters and social media messages warning residents against free movement during the planned festival.
The statement, signed by the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the suspects, allegedly operating under the name “Oje Parapo of Oregun,” were apprehended for distributing handbills that sought to restrict residents’ freedom of movement, expression and dignity.
According to the police, the publications were capable of inciting public fear and disrupting law and order.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has consequently ordered the immediate suspension of the festival earlier scheduled for November 27 and 28, 2025,” the statement said.
“He warned that the command will not tolerate any activity capable of breaching public peace, threatening safety or disrupting law and order in the state.”
The police further vowed that no cultural event or gathering that could heighten tension or endanger lives would be allowed to hold in the state.
The statement also recalled a similar incident on November 23, 2025, at Mafoluku in Oshodi under the Makinde Division, where 12 persons were arrested for allegedly circulating provocative publications with the intent to incite disorder.
“All suspects are currently under investigation and will be charged to court at the conclusion of inquiries,” the command added.
Reiterating the suspension, CP Jimoh directed members of the Oje Parapo group to desist from any attempt to proceed with the festival, stressing that security for such an event could not be guaranteed.
He condemned the fear already created among residents as unacceptable and warned that anyone attempting to undermine public peace would face the full weight of the law.
The command urged residents of Lagos to go about their lawful activities without fear, assuring them of sustained protection of lives and property.
