The United States Government has donated $5 million to the United Nations Children’s Fund to provide lifesaving nutrition support to children suffering from acute malnutrition in North-West Nigeria.
The contribution, announced on Thursday by the US Mission to Nigeria in a statement, was made through the US State Department to support humanitarian efforts in the region.
According to the statement, the funding will enable UNICEF to deliver lifesaving nutrition services to at least 70,000 children affected by acute malnutrition across the North-West.
“The State Department provided $5m to UNICEF to deliver lifesaving nutrition support to at least 70,000 children with acute malnutrition in North-West Nigeria. These funds will be used by UNICEF to provide ready-to-use food, medicine, and other humanitarian supplies,” the statement read.
It added that the donation reaffirmed the United States’ global commitment to humanitarian assistance, noting that the support reflects its leadership and compassion.
The North-West region continues to face severe food insecurity and high levels of malnutrition, worsened by conflict and displacement, which have disrupted farming activities and access to basic services.
UNICEF currently runs nutrition programmes across the region, providing ready-to-use therapeutic food and medical supplies to treat children with acute malnutrition.
The United States remains one of the key donors supporting UNICEF and other humanitarian agencies in Nigeria, contributing funds to protect vulnerable children in crisis-affected areas.
