NDLEA SEIZES N2.8BN WORTH OF ILLICIT DRUGS IN JIGAWA, SECURES 136 CONVICTIONS IN 2025

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Jigawa State Command, has seized 1,944.389 kilograms of illicit drugs valued at N2.8 billion in 2025, securing 136 convictions as part of intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse.

The State Commander of the NDLEA, Hassan Kabaju, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the Command’s 2025 operational activities at its headquarters in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.

Kabaju said the seizures were made amid a global push to curb drug abuse, with the Jigawa Command recording significant successes through sustained enforcement operations across the state.

According to him, the seized substances comprised 441.973kg of cannabis sativa, 1,373.886kg of psychotropic substances, and 128.520kg of other drugs of abuse.

“The seized drugs are worth approximately N2.8 billion, based on current market prices,” the Commander stated.

During the year under review, Kabaju revealed that 577 suspects were arrested for drug-related offences, including 558 males and 19 females, out of which 136 peddlers were successfully prosecuted and convicted.

“The Command worked tirelessly with great determination to limit the supply and abuse of hard drugs and other psychoactive substances in Jigawa State,” he said.

Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA also intensified its drug demand reduction efforts. Kabaju disclosed that 552 drug users were counselled, while 59 male drug-dependent persons were referred for treatment and rehabilitation at the Command’s Drug Demand Reduction Unit.

Under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaign, the Jigawa Command delivered 39,383 drug prevention education lectures and advocacy sessions across various schools, including tertiary institutions, during the year.

Despite the achievements, the Commander identified inadequate vehicles, administrative tools, and operational equipment as key challenges confronting the Command.

Nevertheless, Kabaju reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to extending its operations to all 27 local government areas of Jigawa State to curb drug trafficking and abuse.

“The NDLEA will continue to intensify its efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking in Jigawa State, despite existing challenges,” he said.

He commended officers and men of the Jigawa NDLEA Command for their dedication and thanked members of the public for their continued support, urging stronger collaboration to tackle the drug menace than in the state.
